I have been looking for fly screens for my 86 millard caravan cant seem to find any anywhere, any suggestions.

Do the fly screens push on to the frame of the window with a rubber extrusion? If so - measure the inside of each window that requires a fly screen & contact your nearest Camec outlet for a quote. Note the fly screens are available in a square bottom corner, or a round bottom corner. See the camec website for listed sizes under "Camec Windows".

At first I thought my fridge was not igniting on gas but after removing it I can now see that it ignites first click. Once lit, the automatic igniter keeps flashing and clicking even though the fridge is lit and working properly. Do you know which part I need to change and if it has a part number?

From the description of the problem it sounds like the electronic module may be faulty. As we are in Australia you should contact your nearest Dometic dealer/ repairer to confirm the diagnosis and quote you to repair.

Please advise if you or your associates can re- gas a pair of hydraulic struts for a Nissan Pathfinder. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a camper trailer with a 60ltr water tank and a hand pump tap and want to put an electric pump on it. What pump would you recommend and what tap to suit it?

The simplest most effective way to install a 12v pump is by using the 005753 Whale in-line pump. Mount this down near the water tank (as it is not self priming) and run off the two wires to a 12v source (a battery charger can be used if only 240v is available, and the pumps only draw a couple of amps) and a switch. Your existing hand pump can be left there as the water will pass through it. This also doubles the effectiveness of your hand pump as you can still use it manually if no power is available.

My RM4211 was working on gas until this week but now it refuses to light. It is ok on mains and 12v and the igniter flashes and clicks as it should. I have checked the gas supply and that is ok. What is the most likely problem? From reading your other enquiries I think there could be two possibilities.

Suggest you take it to your nearest Caravan Fridge Service Centre for a detailed test and quote.

I believe you're the supplier of Roof Proof and I was just wondering if it is easily applied onto the roof of a caravan. Is it for use on the seals or all over the roof and what colours does it come in? We have previously had someone apply it to our van approx 5 years ago and want to re do it again. Can it go over existing waterproofing.

In NSW contact G&L Caravan repairs on 9632-1687. They will be able to advise if the seal is available as a spare part if it is the sliding section that has the leak, or if it is the fixed section the glazing wedge that holds the glass in should be available as a spare from your nearest Camec store.

Main door seals are not available as a spare part, only the complete door. You could try "All Seals" Refrigeration Door Seals in Sydney on 02-9634-7634. They may be able to help with an after market seal. Alternately contact one of the Camec Retail stores for a costing on a new door.

Having a look at your comments on recoating roof - I have just bought a little 11ft 1970 caravan and as I imagine often happens the inside shows some water damage and the outside roof and edges is covered with silicon sealant of various ages. I was thinking of trying the plas-t-cote paint - what preparation needs to be done? I presume all the silicone sealant needs to be removed - can you paint over the corner edging as I imagine this is one of the leaking points and is is useful to use a sealant tape such as made by the plas-T-coat people over the joints before painting the joints and corners with plas-t-cote. How does the plas-t-coat hold up to the movement of the joints of the van with travel? I live in country Victoria - can I buy plas-t-cote from you and what is the approximate cost please Thanks for your help - Suzanne.

G'day. I have problem with the above fridge where it works on 12volt, but nothing on 240 and the flame goes out all the time on gas, are the 240volt elements still available for these? And can I clean the gas jet myself?

Also check that the thermostat is working OK, and yes, a good cleanout may help.

Camec doors are measured and listed as the hole size needed to fit the door. You are best to measure from inside the van the height and width of the door to get the correct size.

I have recently acquired a camper-trailer approx. 20 yrs old. The fridge is an Electrolux Gas/Electric and is not working. Should I have it looked at for repairing or would I be better off buying a replacement. If so, do they need to be expertly fitted, etc? I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks

Most caravan refrigerator service agents will be willing to give you a quote to get repaired. This would be helpful in you weighing up the cost of repair vs. a new fridge. As a rule of thumb if the fridge isn't working it's probably going to cost about half the price of a new one to be repaired. Fitting would be fairly straight forward as the gas/ 12v/ 240v connections should be already there from the old one. It's recommended you get a licensed gas fitter to install the gas part. Depending on the replacement model some cabinetry work may be required.

I have a Dometic RM361 90lt fridge made in Sweden. The freezer drops to -5.8 degrees centigrade but the fridge section only drops to 16 degrees. What would be the most likely problem. If I changed to a compressor type fridge what would fit the same compartment approximate size 730HX550DX535W I have a 600W inverter installed to convert to 240v.Any help would be appreciated. John.

Due to the age of the Fridge it is probably not worth repairing as it sounds like a partial blockage in the cooling unit. Frigo, Engel and Waeco all make compressor fridges in varying sizes. Check their brochures for one that’s near the closest fit. Some carpentry work may be required to achieve a professional finish.

We have a new Jayco motorhome with the standard tv antenna which doesn't seem to work too well in locations out of the city. Are there any additions available to make reception better?

Part #4085-633 conversion kit - 8-Jan-07

What does it convert? At present I have a Jarrett F10204 single speed 5 to 1. I would like to retain the 5 to 1 but also have somewhere between that and 10 to 1 for when the boat is almost on the trailer. I have no trouble converting the existing shaft to hex drive handle. I would then end up with a 2 speed winch. It looks like I should be able to fit bearings into pre punched holes in the frame and fit another shaft with more gears on it. Is this what the conversion kit does?

The spare parts kit #10111E is NOT a conversion kit. It is an intermediate pinion replacement for the 3 speed 800kg - 1000kg boat trailer winch range. The F10204 winch is a single speed 5:1 ratio 500kg - 700kg boat trailer winch.

There are no conversion kits available to convert one winch type to another. The various types of winches available have been designed and manufactured to meet their respective ratings, i.e., load ratings.

Can the 2 burner + grill alcohol stove be converted to burn propane?

Not as far as we are aware, although you may get someone who could. You would have to weigh up the cost of the conversion against the purchase of a ready to go LP Gas stove.

Does the dometic fridge have a compressor? I have been told that it is necessary to have a compressor for the fridge to work effectively in tropical areas.

Compressor fridges do not generate as much heat and aren't as reliant on the ambient temperature around it. Also compressor fridges do not have to be as critically level as the Absorption type. The downside of course is that you have a motor humming while it is running, while the Absorption style is virtually silent.

I have an Electrolux 212 (probably a 1984 model)3 way fridge and it is not cooling on gas, 12v or 240v. The back is warm on power and gas but doesn't cool.

Caravan Cover - 09-Oct-2006

I would like to know the correct method for putting a cover over a 20' caravan.  No instructions come with the cover.

Firstly, lay the cover out and locate the tag with the word "FRONT" located on the hem of the cover. Undo the three zippers on the door side panel.

Grab the front & rear corners where the roof section & the top of the unzipped door side panel meet. Flip the unzipped side panel over so it lies on top of the roof section. Two persons required.

Begin pulling the cover up and over the roof. Use a step-ladder or platform to help with this process. It is recommended installation does not take place during high-winds or bad weather.

Take special care when covering air conditioner units or other items located on the roof as this may cause damage to the cover.

Remember, if the cover does not slide freely it may be caught on something so check the cover carefully before pulling on the straps or material.

Now that the cover is completely over the roof, pull the unzipped side panel down to the bottom.

Check the cover to make sure it is sitting evenly over the entire caravan.

Slip the cover over the corners of the caravan making sure it is not caught on the stabilizers or other sharp objects.

Begin zipping up the side panel.

Once the cover is completely in place it is time to secure the cover using the buckle straps located along the base of the cover. Throw the long straps underneath the caravan so they reach the opposite side.

These straps prevent the cover billowing in windy conditions. Do not over tighten straps as pulling the cover too tight may put undue tension on seams.

The cover features eight reinforced vinyl tabs located on all four corners of the cover. These are designed to take up any excess material.

Using the rope supplied, tie one end to a reinforced vinyl tab. Do not use octopus straps or bungee cords as they can pull the grommet out of the tab.

Create a criss/cross effect with the rope but do not over tighten. Do not use these tabs to secure the cover to the ground in any way.

Now is the time to locate any possible wear areas and reinforce them with the patch material on the inside of the cover. Do a final check to make sure the cover is not caught on any sharp objects. Remember that the cover may move during strong winds.

Help!!! The last time we went for a new fridge for an old monza, came back with a brand new caravan! Expensive hey!

The Fridge could be in need of a Gas service (cleaning the jets, flues etc) or it could need the unit re-gassing to make it function once more. Suggest you take it to you nearest Refrigeration mechanic for a quote and then weigh up the cost of repair against that of a new Fridge.

I have been searching for a washer/dryer or at least a washing machine suitable for installation on my boat (situated in Brisbane). I have 3 doorways to get the machine into the area we want to install the machine. Doorway width is only 450mm The smallest machine we have found is the space saver (electrolux) which is 495mm. Are you aware of any smaller machine. If not, can the cabinet be removed and then replaced on the electrolux.

The Lemair mini washing machine has a width of 416mm. It weighs 14.5kgs and a load capacity of 2.2kgs. Fast wash takes just 25minutes, medium wash 44min, Heavy wash 64min. It is 240v.

There is a diaphragm repair kit available for around $30.00, this may or may not stop your surging. Also check for air leaks in the lines which can cause the pump to intermittently run.

My guess is that the larger folded crimped tube has to be dismantled and some or all of the insulation removed but I could be wrong. I would welcome some advise.

The element may or may not have a locating screw. If so, loosen it. The element should then come out easily. We advise the wearing of gloves and eye protection as the insulation may cause irritation.

Looking at the range of Mould removal products CAMEC stock, they all list they are suitable for textiles, e.g. carpet, annexes, mattress etc. only. Suggestions include washing the Mould with soap & water. Your local ship chandler should have something that is used in the Marine Trade to re-coat.

Camec Load Equalizing Kit - 15 May 2006

According to the fitting instructions supplied with the equalizers the Caravan chassis can be no wider than 140mm at the nose. The Safety chains you have must make it wider than this. It is stated that the coupling will have to project on a plate to allow clearance.

Hi, The hatch on my 2004 Jayco Swan needs to be replaced as one corner of the outside frame is rusting and lifting away from the sealant. I am able to replace the part myself but ned to know the nearest supplier. I've been told that Jayco use Camec hatches - is this correct? Can I buy just parts for the hatch as there is nothing wrong except for the rusty exterior frame? Is this type of problem unusual for a van that is less than 2 yeards old? Thanks Craig

We believe Jayco install their own brand of hatch unless it is of the Four seasons variety. Ring the local Jayco dealer in your State for more information.

I have a 16ft Millard mid 80s i was wondering if it was possible to re clad over the existing outer walls or would it be more practical to paint it ? The van has a few dents in it & i think it would be too hard to hide by painting it. Maybe seconds or slightly marked sheets & a mould to cover up joins, not sure, hope you can help.

We've never heard of cladding over the original Aluminium. This may throw up more problems than it fixes. I would direct you to your nearest Caravan repairer who I'm sure would suggest stripping the outer walls completely & putting new cladding on. This is probably a bigger job than you had hoped for but it would be the best idea.

I am starting on refit (major) of old camper. Was considering including 12v wiring while not required for now may be in the future. What size wire would you suggest for running fridge and perhaps solar further down the track? Thanks

Hi Kevin - there is a Caravan Cover that suits 4.8 to 5.4metres long (16' - 18'), and one that suits a 5.4 to 6m van (18' - 20'). I would measure in metres how long your van is exactly , taking into account any spare tyres Or Air Conditioners that you want covered. If so I would probably suggest the 18'-20' cover as with the straps that go underneath you could pull tighter for a snug fit.

Hi, if I used a sliding window and mounted it on its end so it slides up and down rather than sideways, would it leak when closed? What would be the best way to have it if used this way, top sliding down or bottom sliding upwards to open? Thanks Lindsay

Hi Lindsay, The sliding windows have drain holes at the bottom to drain any water build up in the Aluminium channel on the outside. I feel by turning it on its side the water from rain etc will pool in the channel and possibly leak into the inside of the van.

 We recommend they be installed horizontally.

Dometic 3 way Fridge - Paul Jordan 09 Jan 2006

Hi, I have a 3 way Dometic Fridge that really struggles when the weather is hot (>30degrees C) It works fine when it's cool. Will it help if I install an exhaust fan in the upper or lower outside vents to improve the airflow? thanks for your help, Paul

An exhaust fan would be most helpful in hot weather. Put it at the base of the cooling unit at the back of the fridge to blow air up & over the heating coils, or one at the top to pull the air up. Make sure that there is a deflector (piece of Aluminium or such) at the top of the Fridge to force the air out the top vent & not trap it on top of the fridge which will just heat the benchtop up.
