3 way fridge Electroloux - 04-Sep-2007 Hi I was wondering if you could help. We have just bought our first van (which is second hand) so we are all new this, the problem is the catch on the fridge door is broken. The fridge is a Electrolux 3 way, Model RM2310. There is one catch which keeps the door closed. This same catch can be moved so it allows the door to remain slightly open when the fridge is not in use. The catch is broken Do you sell or know where I could buy this catch. The catch itself is bolted on by one bolt from the top. Do you require a picture as I have the broken catch. Regards Peter |
A: |
The travel latch for RM2310 is our part number 003344. Held on by a single screw through the middle, it allows the door to be closed completely or slightly ajar to allow ventilation when not in use. As you are in NSW contact sales@caravanacc.com.au for pricing & postage costs. |

Dometic RM 4211 automatic igniter - 23-Jul-2007 At first I thought my fridge was not igniting on gas but after removing it I can now see that it ignites first click. Once lit, the automatic igniter keeps flashing and clicking even though the fridge is lit and working properly. Do you know which part I need to change and if it has a part number? |
A: |
From the description of the problem it sounds like the electronic module may be faulty. As we are in Australia you should contact your nearest Dometic dealer/ repairer to confirm the diagnosis and quote you to repair. |

Q: |
Water Pump and tap - 23-Jul-2007 I have a camper trailer with a 60ltr water tank and a hand pump tap and want to put an electric pump on it. What pump would you recommend and what tap to suit it? |
A: |
The simplest most effective way to install a 12v pump is by using the 005753 Whale in-line pump. Mount this down near the water tank (as it is not self priming) and run off the two wires to a 12v source (a battery charger can be used if only 240v is available, and the pumps only draw a couple of amps) and a switch. Your existing hand pump can be left there as the water will pass through it. This also doubles the effectiveness of your hand pump as you can still use it manually if no power is available. |

3 way not working on gas - 22-Jul-2007 My RM4211 was working on gas until this week but now it refuses to light. It is ok on mains and 12v and the igniter flashes and clicks as it should. I have checked the gas supply and that is ok. What is the most likely problem? From reading your other enquiries I think there could be two possibilities. |
A: |
As there is no "popping" sound (that's the gas trying to ignite), or flame at all it sounds like the gas is not getting through to the Igniter. There may be gas in the line, but a blockage (such as dust, dirt, or spiders!) is stopping it from lighting. Suggest you take it to your nearest Caravan Fridge Service Centre for a detailed test and quote. |

Plas-T-Cote - 06-Feb-2007 Having a look at your comments on recoating roof - I have just bought a little 11ft 1970 caravan and as I imagine often happens the inside shows some water damage and the outside roof and edges is covered with silicon sealant of various ages. I was thinking of trying the plas-t-cote paint - what preparation needs to be done? I presume all the silicone sealant needs to be removed - can you paint over the corner edging as I imagine this is one of the leaking points and is is useful to use a sealant tape such as made by the plas-T-coat people over the joints before painting the joints and corners with plas-t-cote. How does the plas-t-coat hold up to the movement of the joints of the van with travel? I live in country Victoria - can I buy plas-t-cote from you and what is the approximate cost please Thanks for your help - Suzanne. |
A: |
The Plas-T-Cote proofing is designed for all metal roofs and hard roof surfaces. With a scraper remove all loose coating or caulking from you roof. The roof must be clean of all loose material. Remove all grease and other foreign matter with mineral spirits or other similar solvent. New galvanized or aluminium roofs should be etched for maximum adhesion. Be sure your roof is dry before applying Plas-T-Cote. Plas-T-Cote can be applied with either a soft brush or roller. You must apply an even coat no more than 1/8" (3.2mm) thick. Plast-T-Cote Alkyd Fibered covers up to 1.2 square metres per litre of roof area. Cover the roof surface evenly giving special attention to screw heads, seams, vents and stacks. Plas-T-Cote will surface dry in 2 to 4 hours depending on weather conditions. By following these procedures and using the proper amount of Plas-T-Cote you will get maximum weather protection plus sound proofing, insulative heat reflection and years of protection for your investment. For pricing contact one of the Camec branches as listed on the website. |

RM 181 3 way fridge 240v element - 20-Feb-2007 G'day. I have problem with the above fridge where it works on 12volt, but nothing on 240 and the flame goes out all the time on gas, are the 240volt elements still available for these? And can I clean the gas jet myself? |
A: |
The RM181 is an old Fridge, but never the less the element is still available. The gas problem is more complex. It could be the magnet inside the safety valve, or the thermocouple which comes from the bottom of the safety valve and into the gas flame. It could be both, or a bad connection between them. Also check that the thermostat is working OK, and yes, a good cleanout may help. |

Camper-trailer Fridge - 25-Jan-2007 I have recently acquired a camper-trailer approx. 20 yrs old. The fridge is an Electrolux Gas/Electric and is not working. Should I have it looked at for repairing or would I be better off buying a replacement. If so, do they need to be expertly fitted, etc? I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks |
A: |
Most caravan refrigerator service agents will be willing to give you a quote to get repaired. This would be helpful in you weighing up the cost of repair vs. a new fridge. As a rule of thumb if the fridge isn't working it's probably going to cost about half the price of a new one to be repaired. Fitting would be fairly straight forward as the gas/ 12v/ 240v connections should be already there from the old one. It's recommended you get a licensed gas fitter to install the gas part. Depending on the replacement model some cabinetry work may be required. |

Fridges - 22-Jan-2007 I have a Dometic RM361 90lt fridge made in Sweden. The freezer drops to -5.8 degrees centigrade but the fridge section only drops to 16 degrees. What would be the most likely problem. If I changed to a compressor type fridge what would fit the same compartment approximate size 730HX550DX535W I have a 600W inverter installed to convert to 240v.Any help would be appreciated. John. |
A: |
Due to the age of the Fridge it is probably not worth repairing as it sounds like a partial blockage in the cooling unit. Frigo, Engel and Waeco all make compressor fridges in varying sizes. Check their brochures for one that’s near the closest fit. Some carpentry work may be required to achieve a professional finish. |

Dometic 2453 Fridge problem - 05-Jan-2007 On 240V, The refrigerator compartment of my fridge won't get cold - but the freezer compartment does. Any ideas? |
A: |
Assuming the Fridge is level and correctly ventilated, it could be one of many faults. Firstly you need accurate temperature readings on both fridge and freezer compartments to narrow it down. We suggest a digital indoor/ outdoor thermometer. Check the temperature on both gas and 240v as a comparison. You may have a partial blockage in the cooling unit which can be difficult and expensive to repair, or the sealing compound behind the Aluminium cooling fins under the freezer may need re-pasting which is easier and cheaper. We can assess & quote on repairs at our Kogarah branch. Contact sales@caravanacc.com.au |

Q: |
Part #4085-633 conversion kit - 8-Jan-07 What does it convert? At present I have a Jarrett F10204 single speed 5 to 1. I would like to retain the 5 to 1 but also have somewhere between that and 10 to 1 for when the boat is almost on the trailer. I have no trouble converting the existing shaft to hex drive handle. I would then end up with a 2 speed winch. It looks like I should be able to fit bearings into pre punched holes in the frame and fit another shaft with more gears on it. Is this what the conversion kit does? |
A: |
The spare parts kit #10111E is NOT a conversion kit. It is an intermediate pinion replacement for the 3 speed 800kg - 1000kg boat trailer winch range. The F10204 winch is a single speed 5:1 ratio 500kg - 700kg boat trailer winch. There are no conversion kits available to convert one winch type to another. The various types of winches available have been designed and manufactured to meet their respective ratings, i.e., load ratings. |

Q: |
3 way fridges - 13-Dec-2006 Does the dometic fridge have a compressor? I have been told that it is necessary to have a compressor for the fridge to work effectively in tropical areas. |
A: |
The Dometic range of Fridges are run by Absorption system, not a compressor. This type of cooling system can generate a lot of heat and the "trick" is to make sure the hot air generated is passed up and especially out of the back of the unit. Hence you will see vented panels on the wall at the back of the fridge, and sometimes fans screwed to the back to force the hot air up. Compressor fridges do not generate as much heat and aren't as reliant on the ambient temperature around it. Also compressor fridges do not have to be as critically level as the Absorption type. The downside of course is that you have a motor humming while it is running, while the Absorption style is virtually silent. |

Q: |
Electrolux 3 way fridge problem - 08-Nov-2006 I have an Electrolux 212 (probably a 1984 model)3 way fridge and it is not cooling on gas, 12v or 240v. The back is warm on power and gas but doesn't cool. |
A: |
Assuming the fridge is level and correctly ventilated, it sounds like there may be a blockage in the cooling unit. This may mean crystallization has formed in the tubes of the unit. Sometimes turning the fridge upside down and tapping all the pipes lightly will help break up this blockage - but this can quite often lead to the fridge working for a while before getting blocked again. Another option is to get the unit re-gassed, however the cost of this can be prohibitive, and considering the rest of the fridge (insulation etc) is quite old, it may be worth putting that money towards a new fridge. A replacement for the Electrolux 212 would now be the Dometic RM4211 which will fit straight in. |

Completing a braking system on a boat trailer - 18-Oct-2006 I already have fitted the 50mm over ride hydraulic couple to my boat trailer therefore can you please inform me of what else I need to fully complete the braking system on my boat trailer (2000kg) Also would you have some kind of instruction on how to successfully complete the assembly. Thank you |
A: |
Hydraulic pipes need to run down your trailer and to each calliper (if it is discs you are using). Check with local State regulations in regards to having a hand brake either fitted to the coupling - or a separate handbrake lever. Be aware that trailers with a gross trailer mass over 2000kgs must have brakes on all wheels with control from driver whilst in driver's seat. As far as we are aware- no written instruction sheet is available. Suggest you enlist the help of a qualified trailer repairer. |

This machine has a 1kg capacity and has a 15minute timer. Note that it does not spin dry. Contact your nearest CAMEC outlet for prices. |

Q: |
Caravan Cover - 09-Oct-2006 I would like to know the correct method for putting a cover over a 20' caravan. No instructions come with the cover. |
A: |
Firstly, lay the cover out and locate the tag with the word "FRONT" located on the hem of the cover. Undo the three zippers on the door side panel. Grab the front & rear corners where the roof section & the top of the unzipped door side panel meet. Flip the unzipped side panel over so it lies on top of the roof section. Two persons required. Begin pulling the cover up and over the roof. Use a step-ladder or platform to help with this process. It is recommended installation does not take place during high-winds or bad weather. Take special care when covering air conditioner units or other items located on the roof as this may cause damage to the cover. Remember, if the cover does not slide freely it may be caught on something so check the cover carefully before pulling on the straps or material. Now that the cover is completely over the roof, pull the unzipped side panel down to the bottom. Check the cover to make sure it is sitting evenly over the entire caravan. Slip the cover over the corners of the caravan making sure it is not caught on the stabilizers or other sharp objects. Begin zipping up the side panel. Once the cover is completely in place it is time to secure the cover using the buckle straps located along the base of the cover. Throw the long straps underneath the caravan so they reach the opposite side. These straps prevent the cover billowing in windy conditions. Do not over tighten straps as pulling the cover too tight may put undue tension on seams. The cover features eight reinforced vinyl tabs located on all four corners of the cover. These are designed to take up any excess material. Using the rope supplied, tie one end to a reinforced vinyl tab. Do not use octopus straps or bungee cords as they can pull the grommet out of the tab. Create a criss/cross effect with the rope but do not over tighten. Do not use these tabs to secure the cover to the ground in any way. Now is the time to locate any possible wear areas and reinforce them with the patch material on the inside of the cover. Do a final check to make sure the cover is not caught on any sharp objects. Remember that the cover may move during strong winds. |

Q: |
Sealing of Caravan - 04-Oct-2006 What is the best product to replace sealant on external structure of caravan. I would like to remove the edge covering and reseal. Also remove and reseal windows etc. Recently purchased my van which is 20 year old and in very good condition but would like to replace all the old sealants. Would appreciate your advise. |
A: |
A popular choice for sealing van doors/ windows/ hatches etc is EZYCAULK (part # 4525-001). This is a platicised butyl rubber sealant which can be used inside & out and has excellent weathering properties. When cured EZYCAULK can be painted over. Try and remove as much of the old sealant as possible. |

Camec 4 bar load equalizer - 26-Sep-2006 I too like Ian (see 15 May 2006) have a Jayco Hawk Outback and a 4 bar load equaliser and am having trouble with the width of the caravan chassis at the nose. I would like to know what "the coupling will have to project on a plate to allow clearance" means. Where can I get plate from and does it fit onto the van or the car. |
A: |
This is a job that should be carried out by an authorized Caravan repairer. A plate would need to be attached to the existing front of the A-frame and the coupling re-located on it to move it further forward. As this could affect the ball weight the repairer will be able to advise on any further modifications necessary. In NSW contact G&L Caravan Repairs on 02-9632-1687 |

Roof Vent - 22-Sep-2006 Is it possible to purchase a roof vent/hatch that is not ventilated when closed? We have a problem with suction allowing water to enter around the doors while travelling. Cheers, |
A: |
There is a range of vents available where the lids are spring loaded & pop up. When closed, they sit on a seal of foam tape to make them waterproof. They are often used in the open position on the front of vans to pressurize them to keep the dust out of the van from coming in through door seals etc. These vents can be found in the Catalogue section under the CAMEC Caravan Accessories Catalogue, and are around part No 40-490 ... |

Q: |
Electrolux Caravan Fridge RM4271 240V Heater Replacement - 06-Aug-2006 The heater element is contained in a tube surrounded by cotton wool type insulation in a larger galvanised tube which seems to be folded and crimped together. The element is 'L' shaped and emerges through a hole half way up the larger tube so won't slide out. How do you replace the heater element? My guess is that the larger folded crimped tube has to be dismantled and some or all of the insulation removed but I could be wrong. I would welcome some advise. |
A: |
The RM4271 is not imported into Australia so we are not familiar with this particular model; however most of these fridges are very similar. You need to remove the outer tin plate material and part the insulation away from the element. The element may or may not have a locating screw. If so, loosen it. The element should then come out easily. We advise the wearing of gloves and eye protection as the insulation may cause irritation. |

Camec Load Equalizing Kit - 15 May 2006 Hi, I currently have a Jayco Hawk (Outback) that I pull behind a Ford Falcon XR6. I bought the 4 rod Load Equalizing kit to help with stability and to raise the backend of the car. The problem is that the 2 rods fit fine but when I try to install the 4 rods I find that the 2 inside rods get in the way of the safety chains (eg. where the safety chain is attached to the A frame of the Hawk. Any suggestions ??? Thanks Ian |
A: |
According to the fitting instructions supplied with the equalizers the Caravan chassis can be no wider than 140mm at the nose. The Safety chains you have must make it wider than this. It is stated that the coupling will have to project on a plate to allow clearance. |

Jayco Swan Camper hatch - 15 May 2006 Hi, The hatch on my 2004 Jayco Swan needs to be replaced as one corner of the outside frame is rusting and lifting away from the sealant. I am able to replace the part myself but ned to know the nearest supplier. I've been told that Jayco use Camec hatches - is this correct? Can I buy just parts for the hatch as there is nothing wrong except for the rusty exterior frame? Is this type of problem unusual for a van that is less than 2 yeards old? Thanks Craig |

We believe Jayco install their own brand of hatch unless it is of the Four seasons variety. Ring the local Jayco dealer in your State for more information. |

Q: |
Painting or Re-Cladding - Wayne Littler 15 May 2006 I have a 16ft Millard mid 80s i was wondering if it was possible to re clad over the existing outer walls or would it be more practical to paint it ? The van has a few dents in it & i think it would be too hard to hide by painting it. Maybe seconds or slightly marked sheets & a mould to cover up joins, not sure, hope you can help. |

We've never heard of cladding over the original Aluminium. This may throw up more problems than it fixes. I would direct you to your nearest Caravan repairer who I'm sure would suggest stripping the outer walls completely & putting new cladding on. This is probably a bigger job than you had hoped for but it would be the best idea. |

Wire of Van - M Luders 6 May 2006 I am starting on refit (major) of old camper. Was considering including 12v wiring while not required for now may be in the future. What size wire would you suggest for running fridge and perhaps solar further down the track? Thanks |
A: |
A bit hard to answer as the current draw from 12v appliances can vary greatly. Common 3 way fridges can use as much as 6mm wire, while compressor driven fridges would get by with wire half that size. Also with regards to the Solar Panels it depends on what size you get (or think about getting) as to what size wiring you would need to carry the power to the battery. I suggest calling your nearest Camec store with some specifics as to what you will be installing to get give them a better idea as to your requirements. Else you could run something around the 5-6mm mark and purchase your appliances with that in mind. |

Slimline Windows - Lindsay Leitch 3 May 2006 Hi, are the new Slimline Windows sizes the actual opening size that is cut into the van to install them? Does any other clearance have to be made? I am preparing the van now in preparation for the arrival of the windows and need this advise. Thanks Lindsay. |

Caravan Cover - Kevin Cowan 2 May 2006 I have a Roadstar Pop-Top caravan with an exterior length of 18 feet. Would you advise what caravan cover would be suitable for my van, and the cost of the cover. Thanks Kevin Cowan |
A: |
Hi Kevin - there is a Caravan Cover that suits 4.8 to 5.4metres long (16' - 18'), and one that suits a 5.4 to 6m van (18' - 20'). I would measure in metres how long your van is exactly , taking into account any spare tyres Or Air Conditioners that you want covered. If so I would probably suggest the 18'-20' cover as with the straps that go underneath you could pull tighter for a snug fit. Prices are around $365.00 to $390.00. Stewart |

Sliding Windows - Lindsay Leitch 2 May 2006 Hi, if I used a sliding window and mounted it on its end so it slides up and down rather than sideways, would it leak when closed? What would be the best way to have it if used this way, top sliding down or bottom sliding upwards to open? Thanks Lindsay |
A: |
Hi Lindsay, The sliding windows have drain holes at the bottom to drain any water build up in the Aluminium channel on the outside. I feel by turning it on its side the water from rain etc will pool in the channel and possibly leak into the inside of the van. We recommend they be installed horizontally. |

Dometic 3 way Fridge - Paul Jordan 09 Jan 2006 Hi, I have a 3 way Dometic Fridge that really struggles when the weather is hot (>30degrees C) It works fine when it's cool. Will it help if I install an exhaust fan in the upper or lower outside vents to improve the airflow? thanks for your help, Paul |
A: |
An exhaust fan would be most helpful in hot weather. Put it at the base of the cooling unit at the back of the fridge to blow air up & over the heating coils, or one at the top to pull the air up. Make sure that there is a deflector (piece of Aluminium or such) at the top of the Fridge to force the air out the top vent & not trap it on top of the fridge which will just heat the benchtop up.
